“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them. The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.”
John 1:6-12

Pastor Bill is currently my supervisor. I report to him. Pretty soon, it’ll be Pastor Ryan.

Good God Almighty is currently Satan’s supervisor. God supervises Satan in a complete and total sense. Satan can’t do anything without the good, wise and sovereign permission of God. The Lord reigns over the enemy.

Satan can only go as far as God allows him. In this passage, he was given access to all that Job had, but he couldn’t touch Job’s body.

The same is true for us. Satan cannot do anything in your life or mine without the permission of God. If God permits Satan to touch things that you have, it is for his good purposes. The good purpose he had in Job’s life was to demonstrate the truth of Job’s character and to refute the false accusations of Satan.

Charles Spurgeon reminds us of the story of a man who was going to give a pound to some charitable institution:

“The devil said, “No, you cannot afford it.”
“Then,” said the man, “I will give two pounds; I will not be dictated to in this way.”
Satan exclaimed, “You are a fanatic.”
The man replied, “I will give four pounds.”
“Ah!” said Satan, “what will your wife say when you go home and tell her that you have given away four pounds?”
“Well,” said the man, “I will give eight pounds now; and if you do not mind what you are at, you will tempt me to give sixteen.”

So the devil was obliged to stop, because the more he tempted him, the more he went the other way. So let it be with us. If the devil would drive us to curse God, let us bless him all the more, and Satan will be wise enough to leave off tempting when he finds that, the more he attempts to drive us, the more we go in the opposite direction.”

Personal Reflection:
o God supervises Satan. But some would say that God isn’t doing a very good job of it. What do you think? Does God supervise Satan? If so, how’s it going with His supervision?
o Stated more strongly, The Lord reigns over the enemy. How might this truth help us in our trials?
