THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR RYAN LADEN
| This weekend we started our study of the Sermon on the Mount together as a family of faith. Below you will find the content covered in the services from this message of the Christ: “Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.””Matthew 5:1-6 (NIV – 2011) In this study we began by looking at the meaning behind the first four of these descriptions of the character of the true follower of Christ. These characteristics were described in the service in the following way: Happy is the one who: Is poor in spirit – This is a reference to being humble before the Lord, acknowledging the goodness and provision of God in all areas of life. These are people who reject arrogance before the Lord and who see the Lord as the source of all that is good in their lives. These humble people will be given the gift of being included in the kingdom of God – all that the Lord has done and intends to do in, for, and through his people. Where are you in your journey of humility? Are you seeking the Lord’s help so that you can be rid of pride and arrogance?Where do you need the Lord to intervene in your heart today? Is in a state of mourning – This is a call to grieve for those things that grieve the heart of God. We cannot celebrate and rejoice over our times of rebellion and sin. Instead, the disciple of Christ needs to see the weight of their own sin and the burden that was taken on by Jesus Christ as he willingly paid the high price for our acts of disobedience. If you are asking God for comfort today, are you ready and willing to first mourn the weight of your own sin and disobedience before the Lord?Ask the Lord to bind up your broken heart as you give him thanks for his amazing forgiveness and mercy. Exhibits the character of meekness – This is same idea as that expressed by Jesus Christ in Matthew 11:28-30 when he referred to his own gentle and humble nature. To those who join with Jesus in his work, they will find reward unending. To those who reject the call to model the heart of the Lord, they will find continued sorrow and disappointment. Who in your life is a good model of this characteristic?Where do you need more of this heart of gentleness and care in your life? Hungers and thirsts for the things of God – As we come to the Lord and submit ourselves to his leadership, we set aside all other gods and idols. We reject the lure of self-worship and the indulging of our flesh. As we follow in the footsteps of Jesus as described here in the Beatitudes, we will find ourselves being used by God in the lives of others. As this happens, we will become filled, satisfied with our inclusion in God’s kingdom and purpose on earth. Are you seeking after the Lord? Do you hunger and thirst for God?If you have drifted away from this passionate pursuit of the Lord, now is the time to acknowledge this truth before the Lord and ask Jesus Christ to minister to you through his Word, his Spirit, and his Church.Seek the Lord and he will be found!
