YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH…

THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIPPASTOR RYAN LADEN

Pattern of Grace:

There is a tremendous pattern in the message of God’s word that needs to be seen if we are to grasp the heart of the Lord toward us.

In almost every instance of a moral imperative, an “ought to” message about our choices and behavior, the call to right behavior is inextricably attached to a reminder of our true identity.

Meaning that the Lord does not call his people to behave rightly in our own strength or by our own will. Instead, the Lord reminds us who we are because of his creation, calling, and acts of mercy and grace.

Example:

This pattern can be summarized in the following, “You are my beloved child… therefore think and behave as such”. As the Lord speaks to our identity, we are strengthened and emboldened to act out of this God given identity.

We are not called by God to earn this gift of identity through our action, but we act as those who have been given a great identity.

Reading:

We can see this pattern of grace at work in the passage from the Sermon on the Mount that we are reading for today:

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16 NIV-11

· How do you see this pattern of living out the gift of identity in verse 13?

· You are the salt of the earth… therefore… stay salty. What pressures and forces are challenging you from living out this calling today?

· What is your God given identity as described metaphorically in verses 14-16?

· As a child of God, filled with the light of Christ, how can you let the light of the Lord shine in and through you today?

In Christ,
