The Expression of God’s Grace
Jesus Christ is the full expression of God’s heart of mercy and grace. His actions and his teachings give us a glimpse into the very nature of the Lord God Almighty.
As amazing as it is to see the grace of God in the works of the Christ, it is also amazing to see that this nature of grace has been expressed by the Lord to his people from the very beginning of creation. Grace did not begin with the birth of Jesus of Nazareth but has been the heart of God for eternity.
We can hear an expression of the Lord God’s heart of grace in passages like the one that follows, which predate the coming of Jesus Christ by many long centuries.
“Praise the LORD, my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the LORD, my soul,
and forget not all his benefits—
who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The LORD works righteousness and justice
for all the oppressed.
He made known his ways to Moses,
his deeds to the people of Israel:
The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
He will not always accuse,
nor will he harbor his anger forever;
he does not treat us as our sins deserve
or repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
Reflection
Below you will find a list of attributes ascribed to God in this Psalm. Consider these characteristics of the Lord and meditate on them throughout your day:
· The name of the Lord is Holy.
· The Lord benefits the faithful.
· The Lord forgives all our sins.
· The Lord heals and makes whole.
· God has crowned you with his love and his compassion.
· The Lord satisfies his faithful and lifts them up.
· The Lord works on behalf of the oppressed.
· The Lord works for justice and righteousness.
· God has given us his word, his true nature.
· God is slow to anger and quick to show compassion.
· The Lord does not treat us as our sins deserve.
· God’s love for us competes with the grandeur of heaven.
· The Lord separates our failures and sins from us as far as the east is from the west.
Praise the Lord.
In Christ,
