CLEANSING GRACE

THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIPPASTOR RYAN LADEN

Isaiah

In the message given by our friend and ministry partner, Denford Chizanga, we were pointed to the message of God that was delivered through the prophet Isaiah. In the previous devotions for this week, we have heard some of the beautiful words of the Lord that surrounded the passage used by Denford in his message.

Today we are going to go back a bit and look at the time that the Lord God called the prophet Isaiah into his presence, so that Isaiah could receive a vision about his own future as a prophet. We often refer to the following passage as “the calling of Isaiah”:

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy , holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for. ”

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? ” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!””

Isaiah 6:1-8 NIV11

Consider

Consider the following highlights and questions drawn from this passage:

Verses 1-4 – Hallowed

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus Christ instructed his followers to open their time of prayer and communication with the Lord by acknowledging the glory of the Lord.

In Matthew 6:9-10, Jesus said, “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’”

When we think of what it means to speak to the “hallowed” God Almighty, perhaps we should have the images of the Lord presented here in the message of Isaiah 6:1-4 in mind.

Verse 5 – Honest

When Isaiah was exposed to a fraction of the Lord’s holy presence, he openly confessed his sin and the sins of his people before the Lord. Isaiah was honest about his own personal failures before the Lord, and he also confessed the failings of those with whom he most identified, the people of Israel.

· What would you openly confess before the Lord if you were to have a similar experience?

· What would you say is the need of the people around you?

Verses 6-7 – Atonement

Isaiah openly confessed his sin and need, and the Lord was quick to meet that need. Isaiah did not do anything to solve his problem of sin. The Lord acted on his behalf, allowing Isaiah to behold the glory of God as a man who knew the grace and mercy of God.

· How has the grace of Jesus Christ addressed your area of sin and failure?

· Have you expressed your gratitude to the Lord?

Verse 8 – Ready to Serve

After Isaiah confessed his sin and received confirmation that the Lord’s grace has set him free from this burden, Isaiah responded to the call of God. The Lord asked for someone to serve, and Isaiah stepped up, without question or hesitation.

Where has the Lord been speaking to you about your own place of service?

What would it look like for you to say, “Here I am. Send me!

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
thank you for the gift of your cleansing grace.
Thank you for removing from me
that which stood between us.
Thank you for the gift of your sacrificial
mercy and grace as seen on the cross.
Lord, I know you have a plan for me
and for all the days I have left on this earth.
Use me for your glory, Lord.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
