Life of Worship
As we continue on in our study of Romans 12:1-2, we are led to think more about what it means to worship the Lord with our hearts, minds, and physical bodies. As we have heard so far in this study, the Lord calls our worship good, pleasing, and perfect when it leads us to become more aligned with the truth of Jesus Christ.
In the passage below, we can hear more about what this lifestyle of worship can look like. In this set of instructions and examples of a life lived in response to the mercy and goodness of God, we hear a list of attributes and actions that should flow out of a life, for the glory of God:
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”
Reflection
Below, you will find a summary of the actions and attributes that should flow out of a life that has been summitted to God in worship.
Reflect on these examples of worship as you move through your day:
Signs of Real Love:
- Hate evil – Have no room for evil in your own heart and you will find yourself further and further from evil at large.
- Hold to what is good – Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
- Be devoted to one another – Don’t give up on each other. Show grace, because grace is needed.
- Honor one another above yourself – Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another.
Signs of Proactive Worship:
- Have zeal and fervor for the Lord – Our worship is active, never passive.
- Joyful in times of trial – The joy of the Lord is your strength.
- Patience in times of affliction – It is easy to patient when things are going your way. But to hold your tongue as you wait on the Lord takes real maturity and strength.
- Pray faithfully – Do not give up. Do not stop being open and honest with God, no matter what may happen today.
Treatment of others in the Body of Christ:
- Share with other believers in their time of need – Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.
- Be welcoming / practice hospitality – Take the first step. Say hello. Extend your hand. Welcome them in the name of Jesus.
- Bless and do not curse – Remember the golden rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
- Join in the blessings of others – Be happy for the success and blessings that others experience.
- Join in the misery of others – Sit with those who hurt. Your presence is what they need.
Evidence of a Worship-Filled Life:
- Live at peace – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.
- Do not be proud – Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
- Do not be conceited – Be willing to associate with people of low position.
