 Keep Thanking God

What if thanksgiving was only once a year? Even though God blessed us every previous day in the year. Even though God blesses us today. Even though God would bless us every future day of the year, we only observed thanksgiving once a year. The rest of the year, we were ungrateful, we didn’t give him thanks, but instead, we complained and murmured and whined. Maybe that scenario is more actual than hypothetical. But it shouldn’t be. We should keep thanking God, like Daniel and Paul.

Daniel kept thanking God. When the sun was shining, Daniel thanked God. The new king, Darius, gave Daniel one of the three highest positions in the kingdom. Daniel distinguished himself and the king planned to set him over the entire kingdom. The sun was shining and Daniel gave thanks to God three times a day.

But then the clouds started forming and the rain started falling. Some powerful political enemies conspired against Daniel to persecute him for his religion. They set a trap, passed a law and made it a capital offense for Daniel to thank God. But even on that dark and stormy day, Daniel boldly opened his windows got onto his knees and kept thanking God three times a day like he always did before (See Daniel 6, especially verse 10).

Daniel wasn’t the only one who kept thanking God. Paul did too. That’s what he wrote in Ephesians 1:16“I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers…” Paul practiced unending thanksgiving. It wasn’t a once a year thing. It was ceaseless, constant and continuous. Paul shared why he never stopped thanking God. It had everything to do with God’s past, present and future blessings in Christ.

The good news for us is that the God of Daniel, Paul and the Ephesians is our God too. He who did bless them, is blessing them and shall bless them is our Blesser too. Let’s keep thanking him when the sun is shining or the rain is falling. Unlike the changing weather, God’s blessings keep coming and coming and coming again. Since He practices unending blessing, let us practice unending thanksgiving. May thanksgiving be our continuous feast.

Reflection Question:

How would you describe your practice of thanksgiving? When it comes to thanking God, where have you been, where are you now and where are you heading? What are some ways that our life group could keep thanking God, together?
