EVERLASTING FATHER

THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIPPASTOR RYAN LADEN (DEVOTIONALS)

Everlasting Father
In the message of God given by the Prophet Isaiah, there is a promise that takes a lot of courage to make. The promise that Isaiah conveys to us from the Lord is that one day in the future, the Lord himself will come into creation in the form of a baby boy.

As such, the Lord will himself take on the purpose of providing final sacrifice for all sin, thus releasing us from the burden of religion and setting us free in his gift of new life.

The promised baby boy will be known by a series of powerful titles which are declared in the passage that follows:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV11
 Everlasting Father
One of the four huge titles to be worn and fulfilled by the child is that of Everlasting Father. This is another amazing thing to say about any human being. To call a child born into human existence by the title of Everlasting Father, there is a serious claim being made.

The claim being made is that this promised child will somehow be or represent the very presence and nature of the Heavenly Father. This is such a massive claim that many have tried their hardest to explain it away as not meaning what it appears to mean in black and white terms.

In the passage below, we hear that Jesus Christ makes it clear that he and the Heavenly Father are in a relationship of absolute unity and oneness while retaining their clear and distinct personhood.

Listen to how Jesus satisfies the claims associated with the title of Everlasting Father:
“Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.”John 14:6-10 NIV11

Reflection
As you reflect on these statements of fulfillment, revelation, and oneness, consider the following:

Verse 6How does Jesus lead us in his way, teach us his truth, and share with us his life?According to Jesus, what is the only possible path that leads to access to the Heavenly Father?Verse 7According to Jesus, how can we grow in our knowledge of the Father?Verses 9-10How do Jesus’ words in John 14:9-10 show that he is fulfilling the title of “Mighty God” as heard in Isaiah 9:6?

 Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I seek to know you more. I desire to draw close to you in my knowledge of your word, your example, your heart, and your leadership. Help me become one of your disciples as I seek to spend time with you today.

In Christ,
