PREACH TO YOURSELF

Preach to Yourself

Round One

One of the most important parts of the spiritual discipline of self-examination is that of anchoring yourself to the truth rather than following the ever-changing opinions of the world, or the vacillations of the heart.

If we truly desire to be tested and tried by the Lord, and not by the person we see in the mirror each day, then it is essential that we preach the truth of God’s word to ourselves as often as is needed.

What does it mean to preach to yourself? Allow me to provide a simple outline of just such an exposition:

  1. Who is God?
  2. What has God done on my behalf?
  3. How do the actions and promises of God held define me as a person?
  4. How should I respond to the work of the Lord as a result?

To help us in our efforts, I would like us to use the message given by Jesus to a teacher of the law named Nicodemus to see the way in which we can use God’s word to preach the truth to ourselves:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.”

John 3:16-21 NIV11

Let’s use this truth to populate the message we need to preach to ourselves today:

Who is God?

  • God loves the whole of humanity.
  • God desires to “save” humanity.
  • God is just, and holds humanity to account for their lack of faith.
  • God is the light that exposes truth and destroys darkness.

What has God done on my behalf?

  • God loves so much that he gave his only Son, Jesus Christ.
  • God has provided eternal life to all who have faith in the Son.
  • God has provided his truth and light through the Son.

How do the actions and promises of God held define me as a person?

  • I am loved by God.
  • I am invited to share in the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
  • I am someone that the Lord wants to be with for eternity.
  • If I have faith in Jesus Christ, I am not condemned for my sins.
  • I am invited into the work that God is doing on earth today.

How should I respond to the work of the Lord as a result?

  • I should respond to the love of God with acceptance, gratitude, and faith.
  • I should accept a new, eternal perspective over the affairs of my life.
  • If I have faith in Jesus Christ, I need to accept that I am not condemned by my sin.
  • I need to embrace the light of Christ and turn away from evil in all its forms.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
please help me preach your truth over all areas of my life today. Help me see the lies of the world and the deceptions of Satan that have crept into my thinking. I trust that your truth will chase away this darkness. I need you to be Lord over my thoughts and emotions today. I submit to you my Lord.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
