Have you ever wondered why musical worship exists?
Why have God’s people, from beginning to end, been a people of musical praise and worship?
We need to come to grips with the fact that the Lord values music, that the Lord likes it when his people sing his praises. Over and over the Lord speaks to his people in musical terms and calls us to embrace beautiful music as praise and worship.
The Lord loves it when we make music to his name.
Proof
Skeptical? So was I for a lot of my Christian life. I am not musical, I can’t carry a tune and I can’t clap on beat. I do not like to be embarrassed in public, like most people, and so for years I just sat back in worship and “appreciated” those who enjoyed musical worship.
I was that guy who said, “I worship in a different way. I am more of a Bible study guy than a happy, clappy, singer type.” Then God showed me what his Bible actually said about his heart for the worshiper. Now, if I am really a “Bible guy” then I need see that I also need to be a “worship guy” as well!
Let me point you to just one of the many passages from the Bible that make this point loud and clear:
1 It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, 2 proclaiming your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, 3 to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp. 4 For you make me glad by your deeds, LORD; I sing for joy at what your hands have done.
(Psalms 92:1-4 NIV11)
Change of Heart
Because I take the Word of God seriously and value its truth, I must acknowledge that the consistent message of scripture is that we are called to give God our praise in times of musical and vocal worship.
Over the years, my heart toward musical praise has changed. No, I cannot distinguish a melody from a harmony and my clapping is still a painful experience for those with rhythm, but I am learning to be obedient to the Lord’s call to sing his praises as we make music to his name.
Example
This brings us to another example from the Psalms that shows us that praise of God is necessary for us if we are going to experience the life the Lord has called us toward in Christ Jesus:
1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
4 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 5 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary. 7 Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 8 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts.
9 Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. 10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns. ” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. 11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. 12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
13 Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.
(Psalms 96:1-13 NIV11)
Reflection
As you go through your day today, return to this message and give God praise in whatever way you are able.
- If you can stop and engage in personal musical worship, give God your heart as you sing him a new song!
- If you are out in creation, pause and reflect on the goodness of God!
In Christ,
