If you love God it is because he loved you first.

It is a beautiful thing to know that there is nothing that you can give God that he did not first give to you. In fact, there is nothing that God asks of you or from you that he does not first supply in you.

The more we see and understand the love of God through his past actions and his constant abiding presence through the work of the Holy Spirit, the more that this love will leap out of us and lead us to want to show this love to others.

Listen to how this point is made in the passage below:

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

(1 John 4:7-12 NIV11)

How has God shown his love for you?

He has come into our lives and into our flesh through the person and work of Jesus Christ so that he might bring us freedom from the penalty that our sin deserves.

We are the ones that rebelled against the authority of God and we are the ones who have become enemies of the Lord because of our love of self, and yet, even as messed up as we are, the love of God has been poured out into us through the cross of Christ.

Even though we do not deserve it, God loves us and shows us this love by bearing the punishment that we deserve.

How should we respond?

If we can understand this gift of love, what should we do in response?

If the love of God is in us, then it will change us. We will desire to show our love for the Lord through the way we live, through our acts of worship, and through our choice to show love to others.

Do you want to experience more of God’s love for you?

If so, then we must follow the example of Christ and become the kind of people that are ready and willing to show our love to the others in our lives.

Today we are being challenged by the message of God’s word to choose to embrace God’s love so deeply and so thoroughly that we cannot help but overflow love as we encounter the people that God will put into our path this week.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I embrace your love. By faith I receive the love you declared for me on the cross. I want your love in me to grow and mature. Help me to be someone that you can and will use to help others see and experience your unending grace, mercy and love. Let it start today.

In Christ,
