Have you ever wanted to be able to see God in person? I sure have.

Many times in life I have asked the Lord to “show up” in person and to be with me physically.

Why would I ask for this? Because I love the Lord and cannot wait to see him in all of his glory.

Moses

This was the same motive that Moses had when he asked the Lord to show him his glory. In Exodus chapter 33 we hear about a time when Moses boldly asked the Lord to reveal himself in all of his glory.

What the Lord did in response was amazing. God took Moses to a sheltered cliff where Moses could stand as the Lord passed by. The Lord covered Moses so that he could not see until the Lord had passed Moses by and then he allowed Moses to see just a glimpse of his back.

See

The reason for this dramatic reveal was that the Lord made it plain that no one could see God face to face and still remain in this world.

In the passage below, the Apostle John echoes this prohibition against humanity being capable of comprehending the face of God. But he goes beyond this statement and shows us that we have been given something just as amazing as was given to Moses.

12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.

(1 John 4:12-15 NIV11)

Questions

Based on this message, let me ask you a few questions:

  1.   Do you believe that Jesus of Nazareth was and is God the Son, one with God the Father and God the Spirit?
  2.   Do you believe that the Holy Spirit has been given to you by Christ and that the Spirit of the Living God dwells in you?
  3.   Do you believe that the Lord loves you and have you openly received this gift of love by faith in Jesus as the full expression of God’s love?

Gift

If you can say yes to these questions, then according to the Apostle John, you have been given a gift that is far greater than that which was given to Moses as the Lord allowed him to see the glory of God.

And what is this gift? The Lord God Almighty lives in you.

Dwelling

You are the dwelling place of the Lord. As the Apostle Paul makes clear in 1 Corinthians 3:16, “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?”

While I would still LOVE to be able to see the presence of God in person, I would rather have the Lord God Almighty choosing to dwell in me, to make his home in me, to choose me to be his tabernacle.

As a follower of Jesus Christ, I have been given, and I have received by faith the gift of the Spirit of God. This gift is no trivial matter.

The Spirit of God is always at work in me and through me, helping me become more like Christ today than I was yesterday. Because of the presence of God in my life, I am not who I once was but I am becoming the man I was created to be.

Thank you Jesus!

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for loving me and for calling me into this life of faith. I am overwhelmed by your grace and mercy. I will never understand why you have shown me such kindness as to dwell in me through the presence and work of your Spirit. I cannot ever repay you for this treasure, but I can honor your gift by saying yes to you today and every day after!

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
