In the passage below, the Apostle John concludes a longer section of his message to the church by concluding that those who truly believe in Jesus Christ will want to obey him and that because of the work of Jesus in us, we can overcome the sin of this world.

Listen to how this truth is presented:

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

(1 John 5:1-5 NIV11)

Previously

Prior to this concluding message, the Apostle John taught us about the absolute necessity of allowing the love of God to mold us and change us into the image of Christ.

Summary:

  •  I have provided you with a brief summary of these bigger points:
  •  We know God loves us because Jesus Christ laid down his life for us (1 John 3:16)
  •  We show our love for God through actions and not just words (1 John 3:18).
  •  God wants us to believe in Jesus and love one another (1 John 3:23).
  •  The Holy Spirit is proof of God’s love (1 John 3:24).
  •  The child of God will overcome the world thanks to Jesus (1 John 4:4).
  •  We love God because he first loved us (1 John 4:7).
  •  If we love one another we know that God is living in us (1 John 4:11-12).
  •  Everyone who is in Christ acknowledges Jesus as God the Son (1 John 4:15).
  •  In this world, the Holy Spirit is at work in us, making us more like Jesus (1 John 4:17).
  •  Anyone who loves God must love their brother or sister in Christ (1 John 4:21).

Brings it Home

And now John brings the point home by teaching us that every person who has received the love of God and who has trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation and as the Lord of their lives, will in fact seek to obey the commands of God.

And what were his commands?

As we heard earlier in 1 John 3:23, “And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.”

God’s commands are summed up by the Apostle John as:

1.  Believe in Jesus Christ.

2.  Love one another.

This is very similar to the teaching that Jesus Christ gave himself:

“He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

(Luke 10:27 NIV11)

Complainers

Even though the commands of God are so live giving and wrapped up in loving God and loving others, there are still those that will complain that Jesus demands too much of them.

If you feel this way, I have good news.

The purpose of the gift of the Holy Spirit, the message of the Bible, and the mission of the church of Jesus Christ are all to provide you with the spiritual strength and vigor needed to be someone who seeks to love the Lord and love others each and every day.

  •  If you mess up, start over.
  •  If you need help, pray and ask the Lord for his strength.
  •  If you need encouragement, join with God’s people in a Bible believing, Jesus loving church.

I hope that today, you will have the opportunity to put the commands of God into action. Love the Lord with all you are and love his people with your whole heart!

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
