As we bring our devotional study of the letter of 1 John to a close, let us reflect on the closing words found in this letter:
And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
(1 John 5:20 NIV11)
As we go into this day, let us reflect deeply and often on what we are hearing in this final thought.
The Son of God has come…
- 1 John 4:2-3 reminds us that, “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.”
The Son of God has given us understanding…
- 1 John 2:20-21 speaks of the gift of this knowledge in the following way, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. 21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.”
We can know the one true God…
- Again we are reminded of the gracious love of God that helps us know him as we read in 1 John 3:1-2, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”
We are included in the person of Jesus Christ…
- 1 John 4:16 reminds us of our place in God’s gift of love for all eternity as it says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.”
Because we are in Christ, we share in his eternal nature and life…
- And we close with the message of Jesus Christ calling us into this gift of new and eternal life as we hear the words given in John 5:24, “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you for revealing yourself to me and for the gift of your Spirit who enables me to receive you and confess my faith in you. You have given me all that I am and all that I ever will be for the rest of eternity. I praise you and thank you for loving me and calling me into your service. Be with me today as I seek to honor you with my words, attitudes, and actions.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
