Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
(Psalm 23:6)
David
Today we look at the last line of Psalm 23. As we do, we must remind ourselves that before David was the king of Israel, before he was the giant slayer, he was a shepherd.
So, David would have to have known that the best way to move a large flock of sheep and goats from one place to another was to have one shepherd lead the flock by walking out in front, calling to the sheep or goats, and encouraging them to follow in his steps.
As the sheep learned to trust the shepherd they would follow him anywhere he led.
Walk
Usually, this is all you need to move a small flock, but when you are leading a large group over long distances, it would be best to have another shepherd to help.
This shepherd would walk behind the flock, looking for strays, ensuring that the group stayed on course and that nothing threatened the safety and security of the flock.
Belong
This is the image being used here at the end of the Psalm.
The goodness and love belong to the shepherd, not the sheep. The goodness and love of verse 6 belong to the Lord. It is the Lord’s love that leads us through the call of his voice, and it is his goodness that keeps us moving in the right direction.
If we listen to his voice, follow his lead, and listen to his call upon our lives, then we will look back and see that his goodness and mercy have followed us throughout our lives.
Close
As we close our reading of Psalm 23, why not prayerfully read through its powerful message one more time:
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
(Psalm 23:1-6 NIV11)
