Every day, we see what seems like another example of how humanity has finally hit bottom. There is no doubt that humanity’s condition is growing darker and more bleak.
- But is any of this new?
- Are we so different today than those who rebelled against our Creator and Lord from times past?
David
In the message of the twelfth Psalm we hear a message from King David that cries out to the Lord as he too struggles with the condition of this fallen world.
1 Help, LORD, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race. 2 Everyone lies to their neighbor; they flatter with their lips but harbor deception in their hearts. 3 May the LORD silence all flattering lips and every boastful tongue — 4 those who say, “By our tongues we will prevail; our own lips will defend us—who is lord over us?” 5 “Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise, ” says the LORD. “I will protect them from those who malign them.”
6 And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. 7 You, LORD, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever from the wicked, 8 who freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human race.
(Psalms 12:1-8 NIV11)
The Problem
In David’s day, he too struggled with many of the signs of this fallen world that we now see and experience. Just listen to the way that David laments the condition of his fellow man:
- No one is faithful
- Loyalty has vanished from the earth!
- Everyone lies to one another.
- People say what you want to hear while seeking your destruction.
- People stand and claim to be their own gods.
- People seek to tear you down with nothing but their words.
- The poor are plundered by the rich.
- Those in need have no voice.
It would seem that David’s circumstances mirror our own. Our world still struggles with every issue named by David. We too can cry out to the Lord and ask for his intervention.
The Cure
In verses 6-8, we hear one way that the Lord seeks to meet his people’s needs. David points those who agree with his lament to one of the strongest and most secure answers to the condition of our dark and confused world.
The Word of God is the answer for those who question how we are to stand strong in these troubling times.
In the message of the Bible, we can hear the truth. This truth is like pure gold that has been refined and purified through the pressure and heat of the fire. From one generation to the next, the principles taught in the message of God’s word have provided stable and secure footing for the faithful.
How about you?
I know that you are reading this devotion, which means you want to connect with the Lord through the message of his word and his people. No doubt, you too feel the need to build your life on the foundation of God’s truth over the shifting sands of the world around us.
But let me ask you this.
- Do you read the message of God’s word for yourself? Do you take up his truth and prayerfully seek to know the Lord more by being immersed in the Bible?
- There is no greater source of wisdom and strength available to you today than the message of the Christian Bible.
- If we seek God’s truth in his word, we will have confidence that though the world might fall under the curse of deception and lies, we will stand firm on his solid ground.
In Christ,
