In the next set of devotions, we will look at five different leadership principles that are found in the text of the biblical book of Deuteronomy. All of these lessons on leadership are essential for all of God’s people, no matter our age or areas of responsibility in life.
Let’s get started by listening to the first of these God-given leadership principles:
9 At that time I said to you, “You are too heavy a burden for me to carry alone. 10 The LORD your God has increased your numbers so that today you are as numerous as the stars in the sky. 11 May the LORD, the God of your ancestors, increase you a thousand times and bless you as he has promised! 12 But how can I bear your problems and your burdens and your disputes all by myself?
13 Choose some wise, understanding and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will set them over you.” 14 You answered me, “What you propose to do is good.” 15 So I took the leading men of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them to have authority over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens and as tribal officials.
16 And I charged your judges at that time, “Hear the disputes between your people and judge fairly, whether the case is between two Israelites or between an Israelite and a foreigner residing among you.
17 Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.” 18 And at that time I told you everything you were to do.
(Dueteronomy 1:9-18 NIV11)
Overview
Here is a quick overview of what we can learn from this lesson on biblical leadership:
- Verse 9 – Moses recognized his limitations.
- Verses 10-11 – Moses saw the problem created by the growth of the people as a blessing and not a curse.
- Verse 12 – Moses saw that seeking to hold all authority by himself would limit the blessings of God and the growth of God’s people.
- Verse 13 – The people were given the responsibility of governing themselves. They were instructed to seek out people of integrity and honor to be their leaders.
- Verse 14 – The people were given the opportunity to accept or reject this new situation. By allowing the people to have a say, the plan became something that they not only accepted, but believed in for themselves.
- Verse 15 – Leadership begins at the top and works its way through to others in the community. Moses created a culture of integrity and accountability and those who agreed to serve under his leadership accepted this culture for themselves.
- Verse 16 – Moses created a values driven leadership structure. Those chosen to lead were to do so on their own, guided by a shared set of values.
- Verses 17-18 – The new leaders were free to act so long as they honored God and held to the guiding principles given by Moses.
Reflection
The wisdom of this leadership principle can and does apply in almost every situation and organization where the people of God gather together to accomplish something of value and purpose.
As you go through your day today, reflect on these questions:
- Am I trying to carry a burden that is too much for me?
- Am I willing to let others step in and be used by God as they supply leadership into this situation?
- Do I have the right kind of people in these leadership roles?
- Am I willing to teach and train those around me to become better leaders?
- What needs to change about my leadership style and communication skills if I want better results in my home, school, workplace, or church?
- Am I willing to do the work?
