In this, the second and final devotional taken from the grace filled text of Psalm 130, we hear a brilliant example of how our relationship with God is built on his work and his strength rather than our own.

This is worth a read.

1 Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD; 2 Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.

3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you.

5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.

6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.

7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

(Psalms 130:1-8 NIV11)

Waiting

There is a theme of waiting that runs throughout the message of the Bible. God’s people are counseled by the Lord to wait on his word, his work, his deliverance, his forgiveness, and his salvation.

Waiting on the Lord to provide what we need most takes a lot more faith and courage than does running off on our own to try and force the will of God to find fulfillment. Here, the Psalmist confesses his trust in the work of the Lord as he purposefully waits on God to act.

This theme of waiting can be heard in another great Psalm:

1 Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.

2 Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

(Psalms 62:1-2 NIV11)

Fruit

Patience is more than a virtue, it is part of the evidence of our salvation. The Holy Spirit at work in us produces patience as one of its fruit. This patience is not just for those other people in life that require a little extra grace from you, this patience also applies to our relationship to God’s work and will.

  •  We cannot run ahead of God and then blame the Lord for the mess that comes from our misadventures.
  •  We cannot claim to trust in the Lord to act and then go ahead and do his work for him.
  •  Nor can we pretend to create our own deliverance because we feel the Lord is slow in his timing.
  •  Waiting on the Lord is part of our faith in God.
  •  When God says wait, we must wait.

Agency

In Psalm 130:7-8, who holds the gift of full redemption?

  •  This gift belongs to the Lord and to the Lord only.
  •  God alone has agency over the gift of salvation.
  •  God alone makes a relationship with himself possible.
  •  God alone is responsible for the forgiveness of sins.
  •  All we can do is place our hope in his agency.
  •  We place our faith in his will to give his love to us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I accept that you are the only one who can create, supply, and complete a relationship between humanity and yourself. I cannot earn my way into being a recipient of your grace. I can only choose to receive your gifts of love and redemption by faith in Jesus Christ.

Thank you for your overwhelming gift of love.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
