In the second section of Jesus’ teaching taken from John chapter fifteen we hear Jesus teach that everyone who is truly abiding in Christ will see God at work in them. Jesus makes it plain that if we are living in Christ and Christ is living is us, then we will, we must bear fruit. If we are attached to the True Vine, then we will see evidence of real life-change.
Listen to the clear and powerful message of the Lord in the passage that follows:
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
(John 15:5-8 NIV11)
Commitment
Jesus Christ has not hidden the high cost of commitment from anyone who has considered whether or not to choose the life of being one of his own, one of his disciples. He had made it plain to us that should we call on the name of Jesus Christ by faith, we are making a serious and lasting commitment.
- To say yes to Christ is to say yes to being changed by Christ.
- To say yes to the gift of salvation is to say yes to the life-changing work of the Heavenly Father who is always at work in us and on us, working for our good.
- To say yes to being a believer in the gift of God’s grace and mercy is to say yes to allowing this grace to so permeate your life that it affects every part of you.
Attached
The life of a disciple is not one of measured commitments.
The branch must be firmly and securely committed to drawing life from the True Vine. The branch cannot shop around for the best offers from other would-be givers of life. No, the branch must abide in the True Vine and must submit to the loving discipline and pruning of the Master.
Examine Yourself
Today is a good day to listen to the words of Jesus Christ and to examine your own fruitfulness as one who is connected to the Lord by faith.
- Examine your words, your attitudes, and your treatment of others; do they bear fruit that brings glory to God?
- Look at the treasure that you hold to be most dear; does it resemble that which God values and considers to be essential?
Fear
You need not fear being included with the branches that do not produce fruit if you have already made your commitment of faith to Christ. There should not be dread in your heart about the pruning process of the Heavenly Father if you have confessed Jesus as the Lord of your life and the Savior of your soul.
However, if you are aware that you have not been producing much fruit that brings God glory, then you should not wait for the Lord to come to you with conviction and discipline.
Turn
Follow the teaching of John the Baptist, who advised his followers to, “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” (Matthew 3:8 NIV11) Do not force the hand of God to bring correction into your heart and into your life; submit to the Lord today.
Turn to Jesus Christ now and ask the Lord to help you see his life and his Spirit working in and through you today. Repent of your old ways and present yourself ready for service in the Lord’s vineyard. You will not regret it!
In Christ,
