Within his larger teaching concerning the need to serve only one master, Jesus Christ called for his followers to be people who can be fully trusted, no matter how large or small the situation. In this teaching, Jesus used the analogy of world wealth to help his people grasp the depth to which His Lordship extends.
10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
(Luke 16:10-13 NIV11)
Trusted
Jesus gives us a powerful maxim for our consideration, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
In practical terms, this should hit home for all of us. We are called to be a people of integrity and honor in all circumstances. As followers of Christ, we must seek to be people whose word is enough because our reputation for integrity goes before us.
Challenging
This is a challenging level of integrity. This means that we must treat every situation in which we are given responsibility as an opportunity to give our integrity to the Lord as worship.
This idea can be applied into many areas of life:
- We must make good use of our time at work as we are being paid to be productive.
- We must work hard to be a blessing and benefit to our families in our work at home.
- We need to study hard and fulfill our commitments at school.
- We need to honor our marriages (as well as our future spouses if not yet married) by showing integrity with every interaction that might be seen as a temptation.
Application
The application of this call to be people who are trustworthy extends into every part of our lives. In fact, there is a teaching given by the Apostle Paul on this subject worthy of bringing up at this point:
9 Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, 10 and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.
(Titus 2:9-10 NIV11)
Even those who were treated as property and stripped of their rights as human beings were called to bring honor to the Lord by showing the highest levels of integrity.
Extreme
This extreme example drives home the point.
If we are to bear the name of Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, then our lives, our integrity, our words, our attitudes, and our work ethic need to be presented before the Lord as worship. As we offer the Lord the sacrifice of our integrity, we become people who are seen as being trustworthy, which brings glory to God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, help me take this message to heart today. When I am tempted to lie, cheat, or steal, help me remember the challenge you have laid before me. Help me to bring you glory by being someone whose word is true and whose reputation brings you honor.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
