Is your life built on a solid foundation or upon shifting sand? When, not if, you encounter trials, hardship, pain, and relational turmoil, what is it that will provide you with the support and strength you need to make it through? In today’s teaching from Jesus Christ we hear a call to invest in God’s wise counsel as found in the words of scripture.
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
(Matthew 7:24-27 NIV11)
The Rock
Jesus Christ names two actions that are needed if we are going to build our lives on solid ground.
#1 – Everyone who hears these words of mine
Where and when do you get into the message of God’s word? It is great that you are reading this devotional, but the purpose of these daily messages from God’s word is not to replace your own personal study of the scriptures. These devotionals are written so that you might develop a hunger to turn to God’s truth on your own.
Try this out today. Set a timer on your phone for a time that you think you will be able to stop what you are doing and open God’s word for yourself. Can you read the Word at lunch? During your break? Set an alarm to remind yourself and get into the gift of God’s wisdom!
#2 – And puts them into practice
How do you know if someone has actually heard and understood your acts of communication? When we see that the other party act on the message we sent, we know that they have in fact heard us and taken our message to heart.
The same is true for God’s word. When we hear the principles of his Word in our own personal time of study and seek to prayerfully and faithfully put those principles into action, then we know that we have, in fact, heard the truth of God’s word.
The Sand
The end result of a life that has listened to the message of God’s word but not acted upon its principles and truths is that this life will be found wanting. Jesus Christ used vivid imagery in this teaching so that we might perk up and pay attention.
Do you want to withstand the trials and hardships that lie ahead? Then you must embrace the call of Christ to put his teaching into practice today while the sun is shining and life is good. If you wait for the moment of calamity to begin to embrace God’s wisdom, you will fall hard.
Prayer
As we go into our day today, let us consider and pray the following:
Lord Jesus Christ, I have heard your word and I desire to put it into practice. You are calling me to grab hold of your truth and seek to allow it to take root in my heart and mind. You are calling me to say yes to putting your example and your command into practice in my day-to-day life and I am ready to say yes to that call. Help me develop a real hunger for your word and help me see more and more ways that its truth will impact my life for the better.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
