In the middle of Micah’s message to those who were about to undergo a time of discipline and corrective action from the Lord, we hear a message that points us to God’s perfect kingdom. In today’s reading, we are taken out of human existence and transported into a glimpse of God’s eternal plans. Be encouraged by this message of hope.

1 In the last days the mountain of the LORD’S temple will be established as the highest of the mountains; it will be exalted above the hills, and peoples will stream to it. 2 Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

3 He will judge between many peoples and will settle disputes for strong nations far and wide. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

4 Everyone will sit under their own vine and under their own fig tree, and no one will make them afraid, for the LORD Almighty has spoken. 5 All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

(Micah 4:1-5 NIV11)

When is this?

Short answer, we don’t know… at least not yet. We know that this is not within our version of human existence. In verse 3 we hear that there will no longer be any sort of hostility ow war on earth during this time of peace. So it would appear to not be during any part of history that we can point to in the past.

In the last days

The term used in verse 1 that says, “In the last days”, is a common reference to the coming day of God’s glorious revelation of his eternal kingdom. The use of this term at the outset of this section of Micah’s message tells us that what follows will be a part of God’s final plan for his creation. We are not yet in this time, but it gets closer each day.

Markers of glory

In the material that follows we can hear some of the markers of God’s glorious plan that will be finally put into place at the conclusion of all things:

  •  The Lord’s temple will be established in a majestic way.
  •  All nations will worship the Lord
  •  The Word of God will go out into all nations
  •  The Lord will judge all
  •  There will be a final and complete peace on earth
  •  Injustice will be removed from the hearts of men
  •  All people will be free to live as they desire

Thanks

Before we get lost in the desire to nail down when and where this glorious new reality will take place, why not stop and give God thanks for the fact that he loves his creation enough to seek to meet their needs for all eternity.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, we thank you for the provision of your love and mercy. We thank you for the fact that by your sacrifice, we have been included in your eternal glory. We have been taken from being enemies of God to being beloved children of the Lord. You Lord have done this work and we praise you for including us.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
