In Psalms 33:12 we are told, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.” The people of Israel were once known as the children of the Lord. To the surrounding nations, they were to set an example of godliness and grace. To be the people chosen and favored by the Lord is indeed a great blessing.
But with this blessing came responsibility, and that is where the people of Israel came undone. In this closing passage from the written message of the Prophet Micah, we hear how the generational failure to uphold the calling to represent the Lord before the nations brought a time of discipline and exile from the land promised to their ancestors.
But even in this time of discipline, the surrounding nations would see the glory of the Lord as the people of Israel would one day be restored and their sins forgiven through the work of the Promised Messiah, Jesus Christ.
14 Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, which lives by itself in a forest, in fertile pasturelands. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead as in days long ago. 15 “As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show them my wonders. ” 16 Nations will see and be ashamed, deprived of all their power. They will put their hands over their mouths and their ears will become deaf. 17 They will lick dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground. They will come trembling out of their dens; they will turn in fear to the LORD our God and will be afraid of you.
18 Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.
19 You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. 20 You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.
(Micah 7:14-20 NIV11)
Accountability
In verses 14-17, the Prophet Micah closes his tale of woah by pointing to the fact that even in the days of their suffering and trial, the Lord was at work using the people of Israel as a testimony to the surrounding peoples and nations of the world.
The tale of their misery would be told far and wide and as Micah said in verse 16, those who hear about the acts of the Righteous King Yahweh would have nothing to say and instead be reminded that there is a God in heaven who holds all to account.
Grace
Micah closes his message with a powerful testimony to the loving mercy of God the Father. In verses 18-20, Micah makes the following powerful points:
- There is no God like Yahweh.
- The Lord pardons and forgives the sins of his beloved children.
- The Lord holds all people to account for their acts of injustice, but he delights in showing mercy.
- The Lord has compassion on YOU.
- Your sins have been removed from you.
- You have been completely forgiven.
- The Lord will always be faithful and true and uphold his promises.
Meditate
As we complete our reading of the message of Micah, we would do well to meditate on the nature and person of the Lord as found within his words.
The Lord our God is:
- Unique – No other god…
- Righteous and just…
- Forgiving and merciful…
- Compassionate and loving…
- Faithful and true.
