Today we are going to dive into a passage of scripture taken from the Apostle Paul’s message to a bunch of his friends from church. In this message, Paul addresses the incredible gift of mercy that we have received as a result of the work of Jesus Christ. This passage is powerful and is worthy of our time today.
Consider reading this message out loud if you are able:
4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions —it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith —and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
(Ephesians 2:4-9 NIV11)
Our Need
In this passage we hear some amazing examples of God’s gift of mercy and grace. To help us grasp this truth, we should start by recounting the need that each of us faces when we consider our standing before a holy and righteous God.
- Dead in transgressions – Our rebellion against the Lord, our selfish minds and hearts, our uncountable sins have all led us into a place of spiritual death. If the Lord does not intervene, we will die in our sins and experience the pain of being separated from God.
- Unable to word – The gift of God’s grace and mercy cannot be earned or attained through our effort. We cannot undo what we have already done. We are in need of rescue.
His Mercy
Through his work on the cross, Jesus Christ has poured out the love and mercy of God.
- Jesus brings us life abundant and eternal.
- Jesus welcomes us into his eternal presence.
- God pours out his rich mercies into our needy hearts and shows us unending kindness.
- God gives us grace and does not demand payment.
God’s Motives
- Why does the Lord do so much good for us who are so bad?
- What motivates the Lord to treat us with such kindness and mercy?
- The answer is love.
God is love and he desires that we should receive and accept his gifts of love, grace, and eternal life. The Lord does not need anything from us, rather he has shared all that we could ever need with us because of his love for us.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you for the gift of your love. I may never understand why you should show me such mercy and grace, but I can only say thank you for all you have done. I am amazed that you want me to share in your eternal nature and glory. Help me remember that I am loved by you as I go into the ups and downs of this day. Thank you Lord.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
