Throughout history, there have always been people from both the world and from the church who have struggled to reconcile the dual nature of Jesus Christ. Some have struggled to see that the Son of God could ever assume a physical nature and so they doubt his humanity. Others have struggled to accept the clear claims of the Bible that speak to the fact that Jesus of Nazareth was the Immanuel, God in flesh appearing. Today we are going to stop and reflect on the dual nature of Jesus Christ as we listen to a great truth presented in the letter of Philippians.
Listen to the message that follows:
1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…
(Philippians 2:1-5 NIV11)
If any…
The Holy Spirit, working through the Apostle Paul, begins this teaching by calling attention to the ways in which we draw support, encouragement, and strength from the teaching and example of Jesus Christ.
Listen to the words used to describe the connection that the believer has with the Lord:
- Encouragement
- United with Christ
- Comfort from his love
- Sharing in the Spirit
- Receiving his tender compassion
Then do this…
Those who recognize these gifts and blessings from the Lord are therefore called to accept the call of the Holy Spirit to demonstrate these gifts as we:
- Seek to be like-minded
- Share the love of god with one another
- Choose to be of one spirit and mind
- Reject selfish ambition
- Turn away from vanity
- Consider others before self
- Look to the interests and needs of others
- Choose Christlikeness in our relationships
More Important
Each of these gifts from the Lord are worthy of our time and attention. But as important as these gifts are, the material that follows is even more important. Let’s keep reading.
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
(Philippians 2:5-11 NIV11)
Who?
Who is the who in verse 6? You know who, Jesus Christ. Those who try and confuse the followers of Christ and turn us away from seeing the true nature of the Immanuel, God with us, usually say something like, “the Bible never claims that Jesus was in fact God or that God truly dwelled within Jesus.” To those confused people I offer up Philippians 2:6-11.
Highlights
Allow me to highlight the ways that this passage speaks to the true nature of Jesus Christ:
Verse 6
- Jesus is the essence of God… all that God is can be found in Jesus Christ.
- Jesus knew that we would NEVER be able to perform our way into a right standing with our Holy and Righteous God.
Verse 7
- Because of our need, the Creator entered into the creation through the person of Jesus of Nazareth.
- Jesus is therefore both fully God and fully man.
Verse 8
- Jesus submitted to physical suffering and death on the cross.
Verse 9
- This work on the cross completed the will of God and brought salvation to all who would receive the Lord by faith.
- Jesus’ name lifted high
Verse 10
- Jesus Christ is the savior of our souls and the Lord of our lives.
- We ought to bow down in worship to the Immanuel, God in flesh, Jesus Christ.
Verse 11
- All who believe in the true nature of the Christ ought to share this truth. All who do not yet believe, will one day confess the truth that Jesus Christ is Lord.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I confess that you are who you say you are, you have done all that you said you would do, and I can trust your promises because you are faithful. I recognize my need for you Lord and I call on your name for salvation. Help me see the truth of your nature and purpose and to not allow others to confuse me with their deceptive stories and outright lies.
In Christ,
