In the promise of God given in the message of the prophet Isaiah, we hear about four great descriptors or titles that were to apply to the baby to be born as the Messiah entered into human flesh. These titles are worth our attention as they speak to important elements of God the Son’s nature and purpose.

Let’s listen to these titles as they can be found in the message of Isaiah:

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

(Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV11)

Wonderful Counselor

The first of these titles is that of the Wonderful Counselor. This term in Hebrew is that of yo értz, a term used most often to describe those who advise royals and rulers. The baby to be born will be wise beyond measure, a source of God’s word and a repository of his life giving truth.

This idea of a counselor and advisor who speaks God’s word into the world fits well with the message that Jesus Christ spoke when providing the promise of the Holy Spirit.

Listen to how this word is given in the following:

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you.

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

(John 14:25-27 NIV11)

Spirit of Truth

One of the core functions of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, and Counsellor from God is that the Holy Spirit will help you and I to understand and apply the live giving truth of the Lord. The Spirit of truth is our Wonderful Counsellor.

In the work of the Christ, Isaiah promised that the baby to be born would carry the wisdom of God into our hearts and minds. Jesus the Messiah, gave us the message of truth and the Holy Spirit brings this truth to life in all who seek the wisdom and counsel of God.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for being the truth of God. Thank you for helping us to understand the work of your Spirit. Thank you for being always at work in our journey of maturity and growth. Help me to never stop seeking your truth. Help me to never stop growing and becoming more and more like you every day!

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
