The last of the four titles of authority and purpose given to us by the Lord through the message of the Prophet Isaiah is that of, “Prince of Peace”. This short title packs a powerful punch when we understand how Jesus Christ lived this title out in front of us. 

We can hear this great promise and these amazing titles as they are presented to us in the passage that follows:

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

(Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV11)

Peace Through Victory

One of the most universal truths of human nature is that peace is a fragile and fickle thing. Just as soon as we think we have established peace in one area of life, up pops another area of conflict and discord. 

In his role as the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ provides us a peace that is not contingent upon our emotions or upon the movements of the world around us. Jesus gives us peace over all things through his victory on the cross. The peace of Christ is peace that has been hard won through his sacrifice, power, and glory. 

Not Worldly

The peace of this world is usually tied to both sides of a conflict choosing to loose, choosing to set aside something vital in exchange for the cessation of conflict. Not so with the peace of Jesus Christ. Jesus’ peace is not tied to this world, it comes from his nature, his purpose, and his complete success in his mission. 

We can hear more about this peace in the passage below:

27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. 

I do not give to you as the world gives. 

Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

(John 14:27 NIV11)

Do Not Be Afraid

Jesus encourages his disciples to trust in his peace, to trust in his victory over sin and death. 

Often we hear this call to embrace the peace of Christ and wonder how we can do such an amazing act on our own. In the following message from the Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul we can hear more about how to embrace and apply the peace of Christ:

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

(Philippians 4:4-9 NIV11)

Prayer

As you face your day today, consider the following prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for the gift of your victory over sin and death. Thank you for including me in your new life and in the gift of your confident victory. I want to live in your gift of peace more and more. Help me to rejoice, come to you in prayer, guard my heart and mind, and think about such things that will bring you glory.
