Today, it is my simple goal to allow the message of the first commandment to be heard in its powerful simplicity.
There are hundreds of passages I could use to illustrate and expand on the meaning and message of this word from the Lord, but I simply want to hear the clear and unadulterated message of this commandment.
So I present to you the following passage of scripture:
Exodus 20:1-3 NIV
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 You shall have no other gods before me.”
What god, worshiped in this world, can compete with the I AM?
All other so-called gods that mankind has venerated in our short time here on earth pale in comparison to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Can the offshoots, perversions, and imperfect copies of true Christian faith produce a God who has intervened in the lives of humanity as the biblical God has done? Where is the gift of grace in their new laws and “restored” religion?
- Can the spirits of one’s ancestors, or the natural world provide you with salvation from your brokenness and rebellion against the living God?
- Can Darwin and his disciples provide a better beginning and explanation of the complexity of the universe than the God of Genesis? Does mankind survive past the point of death in the materialistic explanation of the origin of life?
- Does the god who reserves paradise for those who earn entrance by destroying the inferior and the infidels bring hope to those who are unable to achieve perfection in this life?
What are the gods that compete with the Lord God Almighty?
For me, I have sought to understand the so-called alternatives to the biblical God, and in each case I have found nothing but a perversion of the truth of the biblical God, or a man-sized god that was clearly created by human beings to make us feel like we are in control.
And yet, it does not take but a moment of thought to list off a dozen would be competitors for the place occupied by the “Immanuel, God in Flesh Appearing”.
We live in a world that seeks to promote and advance any and every possible alternative to the biblical God. Governments, social activists, and even modern science all seem to be focused on the one goal of finding a way to convince you to turn away from the one true God.
We need to listen to the first command again and again as we steel ourselves for the onslaught of imposters and liars that will try to take the place of our Lord today.
Invitation
So hear God’s wisdom, contemplate his call to action, and take to heart the invitation the command brings to you today.
- In the message of the command, we hear that the God who speaks, who rescues, who intervenes, who loves, and cares for those willing to trust in his leadership and pledge themselves into his service, calls out to us.
- As we acknowledge the singularity of the God we serve, we find ourselves drawn into his company and welcomed by his grace.
- It is amazing that we are so loved by the God who called our names and brought us forth into this material world, and who will one day soon receive our souls through the saving work of Jesus Christ.
Hear the word of the Lord one more time and give thanks to the God who speaks.
Exodus 20:1-3 NIV
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 You shall have no other gods before me.”
