In our study of the seventh commandment (Do not commit adultery. Exodus 20:14), the child of God is given a calling to become a person who values faithfulness and fidelity to others as well as to the Lord. Another great lesson we can learn from this commandment relates to the fact that in this commandment, the Lord is declaring his love for seeing his people uphold and honor the God given covenant of marriage.

If the Lord calls us to avoid at all costs the sin of adultery, then we must also hear his calling given to all who would seek to honor and uphold the gift of marriage. Biblical marriage was given to God’s people because it shows something of the heart and character of the Lord.

Examples

In the passages that follow, we can hear several examples of the divine origin of the institution of marriage:

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

(Genesis 2:24 NIV11)

5 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

(Matthew 19:5-6 NIV11)

31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

(Ephesians 5:31 NIV11)

Marriage Matters

From the first act of creation, to the teaching and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the message of the Apostles given by the Holy Spirit to the church, the Lord has made a big deal out of marriage.

The marriage of one man to one woman, joined together in God’s covenant of shared love, honor, and service, was an invention of our creator and was fully endorsed as God’s plan for the families of the Body of Christ (the church). Marriage matters to the Lord.

Quality Matters

Even more than that, the Lord cares about the quality and nature of our marriages. In these passages we can hear a bit more about the kind of marriages that the Lord wants his children to have:

  •   Husband and wife are a new creation.
  •   They should step out from under the authority and provision of their parents.
  •   They should seek unity with each other on all fronts.
  •   They should honor one another with their bodies.
  •   Marriage requires 100% commitment from both husband and wife.
  •   If God is the glue, the marriage will last to the end.

Commandment

Because the Lord created marriage, he wants to protect it.

That is why the Lord calls his people to pursue faithfulness and to avoid adultery or unfaithfulness at all costs. The commandment seeks to help us see that a lack of faithfulness in marriage is a big deal to God. He cares about our commitments to one another.

Whether or not we are married, and whether or not you have experienced the right kind of marriage in this live, in this command and in the creation of marriage, you are being shown that the Lord wants us to mirror what we see in the heart of God concerning faithfulness in marriage.

God desires faithfulness from us no matter our marital status.

The Lord wants us to see his essential character of fidelity and faithfulness and to seek to mirror this characteristic in our own hearts.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, help me to walk in your ways, to mirror your nature and heart today. Help me show your love and mercy to my spouse or to my family today. Give me a portion of your faithful heart so that I may honor you in the way I treat others.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
