Have you ever heard someone say, “The heart wants what the heart wants”? It is a common phrase used to excuse any number of terrible choices that often bring nothing but pain into the lives that utter this phrase. The Lord does not agree with such silly ideas and instead calls and equips his people to turn away from ugly and sinful thoughts as they are led by the Holy Spirit to turn to new and honorable ideas and desires.
In the message of the Prophet Jeremiah, we are told the following about just how much we can allow our emotions to lead us into making decisions that clearly conflict with the will and word of the Lord:
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9 NIV11)
We cannot allow ourselves to buy the lie that if our hearts want something (meaning we have an emotional impulse) that this then excuses us from all responsibility about those decisions.
In the following passage, we are going to hear more about how the Lord calls us and enables us to choose holiness and beauty over sinfulness and evil.
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
(Philippians 4:8-9 NIV11)
Equipped
We have within us the very person and nature of the Holy Spirit, and therefore we have been equipped with all that we need to shift our thinking from that which brings pain and misery to that which sets us free in Christ.

We need to allow the Lord to work in us to lead us away from those desires, thoughts, wants, fears, and expectations that do not honor God, nor do they bring us joy.
Take Action
We need to allow the Lord to work in us to lead us away from those desires, thoughts, wants, fears, and expectations that do not honor God nor do they bring us joy.
In this teaching we are called to purposefully choose to participate in the following actions:
- Identify that which is truth from God
- See what ideas are fitting for a child of God verses those of the world.
- Seek out those things in life that are from God and honor God.
- See what ideas are fitting for a child of God versus those of the world. self-centered, and hateful.
Look to Others
We are challenged in this teaching to look to the example of others around us who are seeking to honor God with their words, their choices, and their emotional health.
If you do not know how to turn away from lust, greed, or any other temptation, find someone you trust who seems to have conquered this area of sin and learn from them.
No matter what, hear the call to identify that which is not from the Lord, turn away from such things, and allow the Holy Spirit to work in you as you walk this road with others.
Consider
If we take this message on board, our hearts will want what God’s heart wants for us as well.
