All through the Bible, we can hear how the Lord speaks to our true condition, our state of being, and our God given identity before we are ever called to take action. Before we can attempt to live out the Christian life, we must first come to grips with our identity as a Christian.

We can see this principle at work in the passage that follows:

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

(Colossians 3:12-14 NIV11)

Who

In verse 13, we hear about who we are as followers of Jesus Christ before we are called to clothe ourselves with any of these great Christian values. This is essential for us to see and understand.

Because of the grace of Jesus Christ, we have been made to be people who are selected, chosen, loved, holy, separated, accepted and wanted by the Lord.

We were once far from God, lost in our sin, living as enemies of the Lord, but thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we have been included in the gift of Jesus’ identity as a child of God.

If we were to attempt to live as children of God without this gift of a new identity in Christ, we would quickly come to see that we do not have what it takes to live a life of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Clothe

Even the action being presented in this teaching reminds us that we do not possess the strength to carry out this calling on our own.

We are challenged to clothe ourselves with that which is not from us. We do not make these clothes, instead they belong to the Lord and are being given to us as a gift to use or wear during the time of our need.

Share

This teaching makes it clear that we are called by God to share a portion of the mercy, love, grace, and patience that the Lord has shown to us. We are not the source of these gifts. We do not have what it takes to wrap ourselves in the love and mercy of the Lord.

Instead, we need to turn to the Lord and ask for the strength and the guidance that we need in order to walk in his footsteps today.

Whatever it is you are facing today, invite the Lord into your schedule, allow the Lord to provide you with what you need and do not try to carry all of these burdens on your own.

Lord Jesus Christ, I recognize that you alone are the source of strength that I can turn to and rely on to meet the challenges of my day. I recognize that I cannot clothe myself with what I possess and that I need what only you provide. I surrender my day to you Lord, and look forward to seeing you at work.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I recognize that you alone are the source of strength that I can turn to and rely on to meet the challenges of my day. I recognize that I cannot clothe myself with what I possess and that I need what only you provide. I surrender my day to you Lord and look forward to seeing you at work.

In Christ,
