In the passage that follows, we complete our study of Colossians 3:12-17:e idea or action in question. Usually, “whatever” is not a great thing to hear from those we care about. But, in our devotional for today, this term takes on a new and encouraging meaning.
In the passage that follows we complete our study of Colossians 3:12-17:
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(Colossians 3:15-16 NIV11)
Included
Whatever you do or say, we are to consider all that we are about to be an opportunity to give God praise and worship. Whatever includes whatever we might encounter in our day, do with our hands, or speak to another. All that we are and all that we do can be, and should be, given over to the Lord.
Another
We can hear this same idea expressed another way by the Apostle Paul in the passage below:
31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
(1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV11)
Here it is again. All that we do in this life, can be and should be done as unto the Lord. Every element of our work, every minute spent in relationship with others, every word spoken, every drink consumed, and every calorie gobbled up is an opportunity to give God praise and thanks.
Universal
Here is one more example of this universal principle at work:
11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
(1 Peter 4:11 NIV11)
Eternal
Here is the big idea that matters to me on a personal level. The Lord is calling me to truly offer every part of my life, all of it, to his glorious person as an offering of praise and an expression of worship.
What that means for me is that any part of my day, any element of my work, any conversation or meeting that I encounter can become something that has eternal value and worth if I do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
That is a beautiful idea. This means that nothing we encounter in this life needs to be wasted time or effort. If we live in such a way that we can give God glory in our work, in our words, in our daily activities, then every part of our lives can become meaningful in a way that is unimaginable.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I want to take this truth found in the Word of God to heart today. Help me give you glory with all that I do today. When I speak, help me speak as one who speaks for you, who speaks to bring others life. When I take action at work today, help me see that you care about my work and want it to be made holy and eternal. I want to bring you glory in all of my ways today.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
