In today’s devotional, we are going to look at a passage from the letter of James that speaks to the child of God who has wandered away from what God says in real and found themselves stuck in a place of pain.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

(James 5:19-20 NIV11)

Conclusion

This teaching comes to us from the conclusion of the letter of James. This is significant in that this is the last point that the writer hopes his audience will remember as they reflect on his message.

The fact that this letter ends by speaking to those who have experienced failure in their walk with God helps us learn more about the heart of God toward those who fall flat.

To whom?

It is very important that we understand to whom this message was given. This last line was given to the adelphos, to one who is a part of the Body of Christ, the family of faith.

This matters because there are lots of people in this world who struggle with the idea that they can be included in the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and still experience failure. As we can see here, and in many other places, being a believer in Jesus Christ does not preclude you from struggling with the temptation to be selfish, lustful, greedy, gossipy, or any other “me first” approach to life.

Wander from the truth

As we just heard, we cannot wander away unless we are first drawn near. As Jesus talked about in his parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:3-7), the one about whom the Lord celebrates is also the one who was part of the original 100.

In James, the one who returns is also a brother or sister in Christ who has lost sight of that which God says is true. When we lose sight of our real identity in Christ (who God has made us into thanks to the work of Jesus), we are capable of buying any number of lies that can lead us away from the path and way that God has called us to walk.

Intervention

Whoever helps this wandering believer to turn away from the lie that they are believing is someone who loves this lost child enough to get involved. If you are fortunate enough to have someone love you this much, try your best to embrace their instruction.

Don’t reject those who speak into your life. Listen and allow the Lord to help you turn away from the slippery slope of continued wandering.

What to expect?

What should we expect to receive from the Lord when we listen to the intervention from the one who loves us enough to get involved?

We are being told here that the Lord desires to help save us from the pain of continued sin and rebellion. When we follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit away from our wandering, the Lord welcomes us home, embracing us and wrapping us in love.

Point

Here is the takeaway from this devotion today; We all struggle with the lure of temptation and the slippery slope of sin. If we fail and fall, we need to see that the Lord wants to help us turn away from the pain of continued wandering and return to a place of health and spiritual maturity.

In Christ,
