In this, the third of a four-part devotional study of Colossians 3:15-17 we come to the second part of Colossians 3:16 in which we encounter another piece of evidence that points to the true Lordship of Christ over our hearts and minds. This particular point of evidence will be immediately embraced by most, but not all, who read what follows.

Read through this great message from God’s word while paying attention to those elements that point to how we are to respond to the Lord in praise and worship.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

(Colossians 3:15-17 NIV11)

Example

As mentioned above, this devotional seeks to point to another piece of evidence that helps us know whether or not Christ truly rules in our hearts. We find this example of a heart fully dedicated to the Lord in the message of verse sixteen which says, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.”

Word of God

As we heard in the previous devotional (which can be found here), if Christ reigns in our hearts, we will have a hunger for the message of the Word of God. As we seek to satisfy this hunger by opening the message of God’s Word for ourselves, we will find that this gift of truth will make its home in our hearts.

If this indwelling function of God’s word is allowed to take place, it will produce other desires in our hearts that will lead us to more and greater responses to the gift of God’s truth and presence.

Through…

Let’s not mince words, this teaching from the Lord, given by the Spirit through Paul’s letter to the church clearly teaches us that musical worship and singing are a natural part of the believer’s expression of love toward God.

If Jesus Christ is allowed to indwell your heart and your mind, then you will find within you a desire to express your gratitude for his love and mercy by joining with the people of God as they gather together and lift their voices in praise and worship.

Outpouring

We need to see that for the people of the church of Jesus Christ, worship of the Lord through times of personal and corporate singing and musical praise comes from a desire given to us through the work of the Holy Spirit.

If we are comfortable with the idea that the Spirit of God creates within us the desire to open and embrace the message of the Bible in times of personal and corporate study and application of this word, then we must also agree that the Holy Spirit will lead the believer into a similar desire to express our love and gratitude to the Lord in times of worship.

Worship and praise of God flow out of the message of scripture and support the transformative work of the Spirit that God desires to do in each and every heart that is willing to open itselves to the Lord.

Application

The desire to praise God is not tied to musical ability or to a love of performative actions. The heart that is ruled by Christ will hunger and thirst for righteousness, faithfulness, wisdom, and personal connection with the Lord through times of praise and worship.

If you are one who struggles to accept that this is God’s will for you as a believer in Christ, then it is time to ask the Lord to help you in this area. If you want help, you can use the following prayer as a guide.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I want you to have supremacy in all areas of my life. I desire to submit my whole being to your leadership and support, but I acknowledge that I have been resistant to your calling of obedience. Lord, I am asking you to create in me a hunger for the wisdom of your Word. Help me see the value and benefit of reading and applying the scriptures to my life. Also, Lord Jesus, create in me a desire to demonstrate my gratitude to you through times of worship and musical praise. Help me to open my heart to you in every way today. Thank you, Lord.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
