This is the second in a four-part study on the message given to the Apostle Paul by the Holy Spirit for the good of the wider church and for the health and benefit of the specific community of faith known as the church of the Colossians. The teaching we are looking at from this letter speaks to our need to welcome Jesus Christ into our lives in such a way that he is known to be the ruler of our hearts.

As you read this great passage, make note of those elements within this text that speak the loudest to you today.

15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

(Colossians 3:15-17 NIV11)

Verse 15

As we heard in verse 15, if we are willing to submit our hearts (our will and desires) to the lordship of Christ, we will be included in the gift of God’s people. As members of the Body of Christ, we are called by God to seek unity and peace with one another within the family of faith.

If Jesus is truly the Lord of your life, you will most certainly develop a love and appreciation for people who make up the church of Jesus Christ. If the Lord is ruling in your heart, you will not give up on being a part of the family of faith, even if the people of one particular church should treat you in a shameful or sinful manner.

Hurt

Lord knows that after thirty years of ministry, I have my share of scars and hurts that have been inflicted upon me by people who wore the name of Jesus but whose hearts were far from the Lord.

The reason that I did not give up on the church (again, God knows I tried to) stems from a Holy Spirit driven passion for the Body of Christ. Because I desire to follow the Lord in faithfulness, I also have a desire to be faithful to my calling to lift up and make healthy the church of Jesus Christ.

Verse 16

Let us turn to the message of verse sixteen, which opens with the words, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another”.

Evidence

From this point forward in our reading of Colossians 3:15-17, we are going to encounter a series of examples of actions, attitudes, and patterns of speech that act as evidence for our submission to the Lord in such a way that we can say with confidence that Jesus is the Lord of our hearts.

Word

The first piece of evidence offered in verse sixteen speaks to the way that the Word of God becomes a part of our lives in a significant way once we open our hearts up to the Lord.

I love the way that our acceptance of the Word of God into our hearts is described in this passage. The Lord wants us to allow his truth to dwell in our hearts.

Oikos

The Greek term used to describe the way in which the Word of God is to be welcomed into our hearts is made up of two common words, “en + oikos”. Oikos, is the common Greek term for one’s house or home. En, carries the same idea as the English word, “in”.

So when taken together, the term carries the idea of allowing the Word of God to make its home in our hearts. I love the image that idea carries.

We invite the Word of God into our minds and into our hearts as we choose to engage with the message of the Bible. As we welcome the Word of God into our daily lives, the truth of God makes its home in us, living in us, dwelling in us.

Others

The second part of verse sixteen we are going to think about speaks to our desire to share the message of God’s truth with others. If Christ is the Lord of our hearts and if we have allowed the Word of God to make its home in our hearts, then we will talk about what God is teaching us with others.

So ask yourself these questions:

  •  Do I want Jesus Christ to be the Lord of my heart?
  •  Do I love his people, the church?
  •  Do I desire to at peace with my fellow Christians?
  •  Do I regularly engage with the message of God’s word?
  •  Do I allow the message of God’s word to linger in my heart?
  •  Do I share what God is doing through his word and in my life with others?

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, help me to seek you in all my ways today. Help me to see the value of your church. Fill me with love for your people and generosity toward the mission of your church. Lord, give me a passion for your Word. Fill my heart with your truth and help me fall deeply in love with the message of the Bible.

In Christ,
