Think about this: what would you know of God, of his values, grace, mission, and person if you did not have access to the message of the Christian Bible? You might be able to infer some of the Lord’s attributes by looking into nature or by examining the intricacies of the universe, but you would not know anything real about the Lord with any sort of confidence. In the message of God’s Word, we are able to meet the Lord and to learn more of his true nature and being.
The truth found within the message of the Christian Bible is a gift given to us by God. In it, and through it, the Lord works in us to mold and shape our hearts, to transform our minds, and to heal our brokenness. It is good for you and me to be in the Word and to allow the Word to be in us.
In the passage that follows, we have a great description of the nature and work of God’s Word, which should lead us to want to experience more and more of this amazing gift of grace.
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
(Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV 11)
Alive and Active
How is it that the message of the Bible can be alive and active? It is, after all, only paper or digital print and not a living being.
The Word of God is alive because of what the Lord does with it.
Penetrates
The Word of God is sharp, cutting through all that we try and wrap around our areas of sin and rebellion. The Lord uses the message of the Bible to speak directly to our need for continued faithfulness. It moves right past our best defenses.
Divides
As the Lord uses the message of the Bible to speak to our areas of failure, sin, doubt, and confusion, these areas of need are carved up, separated from that which the Lord wants to grow and develop in us.
The message of the Bible shows us the lines of demarcation between the person that the Lord is making us into through the work of Jesus Christ and the leadership of the Holy Spirit, and the person that we once were before we submitted to the Lordship of Christ. It is a blessing to see the difference between who we have been created to become and the person that we once worshiped and served in our brokenness and sin.
Judges
Usually, we avoid any kind of judgment. We are not fans of being observed, weighed, and measured. But when the Lord uses His Word to bring judgment, it is for our good, not for our condemnation.
When we read the message of God’s Word, our wrong-headed ideas, our lustful and fleshly desires, our broken and fragmented images of our true nature are exposed for what they are. And this judgment brings us healing if we take it to heart.
Laid bare
Nothing in all of creation is hidden from the Lord. Just think about that. Nothing means nothing.
There are no hidden thoughts, secret desires, backroom deals, or unobserved sleights of hand that can escape the notice of the one who formed us, saved us, and called us according to his purposes.
The Word is used to shine a God sized light on all that we are trying to keep out of God’s sight. When we understand that this exposure is a gift of grace and not something to be afraid of, the message of God’s word becomes for us a true source of healing and strength.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, help me fall in love with the truth of your Word. Create in me a desire to be examined by the goodness of your truth. Use your word to open up my heart and soul so that you can bring healing and cleansing into my innermost being.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
