I love the fact that Jesus Christ, God the Son, knows what I need more than I ever could. As such, the Lord has given me a resource and source of strength that is greater than anything I could ever of imagined. I have been given the very Spirit of God, the personalized presence of the Lord, as my leader, guide, companion, advocate, and teacher. Jesus Christ knows that I cannot seek faithfulness and obedience to his commands, nor can I live out his example in this life without the equipping provided by the Holy Spirit.

In the passages that follow, we hear a teaching from Jesus Christ that helps us understand more about the purpose and work of the Holy Spirit. In this teaching, the Lord helps us see that the gift of the Spirit is worth exploring and his leadership is worth following.

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

(John 14:15-17 NIV11)

Obedience

Obedience to the commands of God is really for our benefit. We do not improve the Lord with our obedience to his teachings. Instead, we are the ones who experience the joys or the pains associated with obedience or disobedience. And yet, the Lord calls his people to seek faithfulness and obedience to the Word of God, not because it is good for us, but he calls us to obey him based on our love for him.

Love

If we love the Lord, we will want to please him with our daily lives. This is why Jesus calls us to look upon the challenge of obedience from a perspective of love.

If we were to seek obedience for personal gain, or in order to avoid pain, then obedience becomes a transaction between us and the Lord. We obey, and good things happen. We disobey and we experience pain.

Dependent

And in such an arrangement, all that we experience in this life and with the Lord becomes dependent on our own personal effort, our ability, and skill. But Jesus Christ knows us, and he knows that we cannot and will not seek faithfulness on our own, even if it comes with material blessing in this life. We have proven ourselves incapable since the Garden of Eden.

Substitute

And so, the Lord intervenes in our failure and inability. The Lord steps into our mess and provides the solution to our greatest need. Jesus Christ bore our sin and failure upon himself, dying in our place, bringing justice to our acts of injustice as he died in our place.

And having become our substitute, we are then set free from the crushing weight of performance and perfection. Jesus Christ is our perfection, and we rest in his completed gift of salvation and new life.

Gift

Again, Jesus Christ knows what we need and he provides for us perfectly. Jesus knows that we need his power and support if we are going to seek faithfulness to the Word of God. Thus the gift of the Holy Spirit. The gift of God’s presence and person that lives within us and provides us with everything that we need to step out in love for the Lord.

Know

If you have stepped out in faith and called upon the name of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you have done so by the power and lead of the Holy Spirit. Even your understanding of the love of Cod as seen in the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was made possible by the leadership and equipping of the Spirit of God.

If you know the Lord, you do so because of the gift of the Advocate, the Counsellor, the Spirit of Truth, the Power and Presence of the Lord God Almighty.

Rest in his leadership today.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
