In today’s devotional, we are going to work through an awesome passage of scripture taken from the opening of the Apostle Paul’s letter to the people of Colosse. In this opening message, Paul congratulates the people of the church for believing in the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for allowing the redemptive work of Jesus to draw them into a real and eternal connection with the Creator of all things.
If you are able, read the following passage aloud. It is a power-packed message that deserves to be proclaimed.
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
(Colossians 1:15-20 NIV11)
Who is the Son?
Every point used in this description of God the Son is worthy of a full course of study. However, for today, consider the following descriptive points:
The Son is:
- The image of the invisible God (image means representation).
- The firstborn over all creation (position in family, not actual birth).
- Creator of all things in heaven and on earth!
- Master over all authorities.
- The purpose of all creation.
- The holder of creation, keeping all things together by his own power.
- The head of the entire church.
- The resurrected one.
- Supreme over all things, people, spiritual entities.
- The fullness of Yahweh.
- The Savior and Redeemer of all.
- The all-sufficient sacrifice for sin.
Creator
Based on this passage:
- How would you describe the role of Jesus Christ in the creation of all things?
- What is the role of Jesus Christ in creation?
- In verse 17 we hear that all things hold together by the work of Christ. How do you understand this sustaining power given what can be seen in the created world around you?
Meditation
Jesus Christ is so much more than whatever description we can provide.
- He is worthy of our worship and devotion.
- He is worthy of our meditations and imaginations.
- Jesus Christ is the giver and purpose of life.
- He loves you more than you can know.
Spend a moment in prayer with the Lord, giving thanks for the fact that our Lord has revealed himself to us through the work of our creator.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
