| “Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and there came a messenger to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “The Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” Job 1:13-19 Warren Wiersbe writes, “In times of severe testing, our first question must not be, “How can I get out of this?” but “What can I get out of this?”” Job’s wife thought she had the problem solved: [Curse God and die!]; but if Job had followed her counsel, it would have only made things worse. Faith is living without scheming. It is obeying God in spite of feelings, circumstances, or consequences, knowing that He is working out His perfect plan in His way and in His time. Today, let’s shift our focus away from our feelings, the circumstances and the consequences. Satan would have us stare at the misery of those earthly things. Instead, let’s gaze upon the Lord who is working in and through all of those earthly things to accomplish His good purposes, forevermore! Personal Reflection: o Job endured a severe season of one loss followed by another and another. Have you ever endured a season like that? Reflect upon it. o How might the reality of spiritual warfare inform that experience? o How might James 5:11 inform it? “Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” James 5:11, ESV |
