One of the ways that we can see evidence of the Creator at work can be found in the common human need to understand and be embraced by the divine. All throughout human history, in almost every known culture and people group, there is a common need for the divine to be understood by mankind. Another way to say this is that we were created with a “God-sized hole” in our hearts and that we are universally interested in filling this void.
This universal need for God is presented in the message of Ecclesiastes 3:11, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.”
Eternity
The Lord has set a need to be a part of the eternal in the hearts and minds of his creation.
When the Lord created humanity in his image, he created with an eternal purpose. Human beings were created so that we might be welcomed into the fellowship and presence of the Lord for all eternity. As we share the image of our Creator, we also share in the eternal nature and purpose of the Creator. We hunger to be like the Lord in this way. We desire eternity.
Calls
In the passage that follows, we hear how the Lord uses this eternal desire to draw us into a place of salvation and redemption as we embrace the work of Jesus Christ:
37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
(John 6:37-40 NIV11)
Purpose
This teaching from Jesus Christ sums up the mission and purpose of the Messiah. The Lord has entered into creation in order to receive all who will allow their desire for eternity to compel them to turn away from the things of this temporary and sinful world and to turn toward the eternal reality of being united with Christ.
· Have you allowed your hunger for the Lord to lead you to say yes to the gift of grace and salvation as given over to you by Jesus’ work on the cross?
· Are one of those who has responded with faith to the call of the Christ and are now held firmly in the eternal grip of the Lord?
· Have you allowed Jesus Christ to fill the God-sized hole in your heart and in your life?
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, it is my desire to turn to you today and acknowledge my need for your eternal gifts of mercy and grace. I want to draw near to you and I believe that you have already chosen to draw near to me. Lord, you satisfy my soul and I desire to be content in knowing you and serving you with the short days I have on this earth.
In Christ,
