In our devotionals this week, we are going to be thinking more about what it means for you and I to be aware of our own personal faith story. Today, it is my hope that you will see the value of your own story of God’s faithfulness to you. The reason why it is important that we have the right perspective on the value of our personal story of faith comes down to the fact that too many people think that their story is of no real value.

Comparison

One of the least enduring qualities of human nature is that of our constant habit of comparing ourselves to others.

We compare our looks, our families, our outward signs of wealth and achievement, as well as our spiritual development and maturity. As a pastor, I often hear people lament the fact that their “testimony” (fancy word for story) is not as interesting or as dramatic as someone else’s.

We compare our journey with the Lord and our examples of God’s work and faithfulness in our lives to those who seem to have had more dramatic conversions or rescues from places of real pain and depravity; we will often become shy about telling our “boring story.” This is not good.

When we consider a testimony of faithfulness to God less valuable than a story of prolonged depravity that finally met with God’s grace, we cheapen that which the Lord values the most.

Calling

In the passage that follows, we hear the call of the Lord for his people to make a life of faithfulness to God their number one priority.

As you read this passage, listen for the value that the Lord places on our acts of faithfulness and obedience to his Word.

1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

(Proverbs 3:1-6 NIV11)

Examples

Let me list out the examples of faithfulness that I heard in this passage:

  •  Remember the teachings of the Lord.
  •  Obey the commands of the Lord from the heart.
  •  Seek to live a life of peace.
  • Make love and faithfulness your core values and top-level priorities.
  •  Seek the favor of God.
  •  Seek to have a good name, to be a person of integrity.
  •  Trust God with great faith.
  •  Seek to submit to the Lord in all your ways.
  •  Walk the path that the Lord lays before you.

Ashamed?

If your story of faith, your testimony, sounded like the passage you just read, would you be ashamed to tell others how the Lord has been good to you as you have sought him in all your ways?

I hope you see the point I am making today.

God does not want us to build interesting testimonies built on cycles of rebellion and restoration. Instead, the Lord is at work in each one of us right now, helping us to walk down the good and beautiful path of faithfulness.

If your story would not make a good movie, ok, so what? The Lord wants your story to point to Jesus, to bring him glory. If that is the journey you are on, tell that story.

Ask

The Lord has given you a story that, if you will allow, will point others to Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord to help you speak of his faithfulness to you today.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
