When I was twenty-one, I hit a time when I struggled to understand God’s purpose for my life. During that time, I felt a need to understand more about what God’s will was for my life, really for every life, and I was pretty sure that if I could understand more about why Jesus Christ came into creation, then I might get somewhere with my own issues.
Highlighter
To help me learn more about why Jesus came into our world, I read through all four Gospels, armed with my trusty highlighter. As I encountered an example of purpose and mission, I made a note of that in my Bible.
When I completed this mission, I went back through all of my highlighted notes and did my best to piece together what the Bible said was Jesus’ reason for being, his purpose.
Examples
The passage that follows was, for me, one of the clearest, most compelling statements on the purpose of the Christ that I could find anywhere.
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. 37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
(John 6:35-40 NIV11)
Faith
In this teaching, Jesus was inviting those who were willing to take a step of faith toward the Lord. He made it clear that he was sent by the Father to be living bread (manna) for those who were willing to receive him. Jesus made it clear that all who turned to the Lord in faith would be welcomed into his fellowship and that the Lord would never turn away from any who believes.
Purpose
In verse 38, we hear a compelling statement from Jesus that connects us directly to his self-proclaimed purpose for being. This statement reads as, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.”
Jesus Christ came into this world to do one thing – to obey the will of God.
Jesus’ self-proclaimed purpose is obedience.
This is the most irreducible, bottom-line purpose of the Christ. Jesus Christ entered into creation in obedience, lived his earthly life in obedience, died on the cross in obedience, and was raised to new life in obedience.
God’s Will
In verses 39-40, we hear Jesus make plain that which it he came to be obedient.
Listen to the will of the Father made plain by Jesus, “And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.”
Eternal
The will of the Father is that the Son should make secure everyone who has faith in God. This is God’s will for Jesus Christ. God’s will for the Christ is to provide YOU with the gift of eternal life, eternal security, and eternal joy.
Amazing
When I understood this truth at 21, it changed my life, as it ought to change yours. It is absolutely amazing that the Lord God Almighty came into creation for the purpose of making it possible for you to be held secure in the eternal grip of God. That is why Jesus came into our world. This is how great the Father’s love for us really is.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, it is not enough to say thank you for such sacrificial love and care, but it is all we can do, so thank you Lord. Thank you for being obedient to the will of the Father in your pursuit of me, a sinner. You are more than I can even imagine. I love you, Lord.
