In Acts 1:4-5, we hear the resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ instruct his disciples to gather together and wait patiently for the work that the Lord was about to do in and among them. The church was to be immersed (baptized – means immersion in Greek) into the person of the Holy Spirit. As the people of faith became unified by the work of the Spirit, they would also be unified in the pursuit of their shared mission to be witnesses for Christ.

Teaching

In today’s devotional, we are going to hear one of the core teachings that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to the church concerning the work and person of the Holy Spirit. As with most challenging theological or spiritual growth questions, we are always served best by turning to the actual message of God’s word as we seek to truly understand what the Lord is saying or doing.

With that in mind, read the following teaching from Jesus concerning the Holy Spirit.

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

(John 14:15-18 NIV11)

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

(John 14:25-27 NIV11)

John Chapter 14

John chapter 14 is a beast. It is filled with great truths that are absolutely necessary for our understanding of the person and work of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This Trinitarian chapter is worth your time. Consider reading it throughout your day today. You will be blessed if you take up this challenge.

As we are thinking mostly about the description of the person and work of the Holy Spirit in this devotional, let’s look back at this teaching and see how Jesus Christ described the Holy Spirit.

Sent

The Heavenly Father sends the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit points to God the Son. Jesus Christ exists to obey and glorify God the Father. The Holy Spirit works in perfect harmony with the Father and with the Son to complete God’s will in our lives.

Advocate / Counsellor

In Greek the Spirit is called the παράκλητος (paraclatos). This comes from two words (para, meaning alongside, and the verbal form, Kaleō, meaning to call out), which, when put together, paint a picture. The Spirit leads us by coming alongside us as we are living this life and calls out to us, teaching and guiding us with the Spirit’s own voice. Another way to translate this term is that of a counsellor. The Spirit joins us in our struggles and shares with us what we need.

Presence of Jesus

Jesus Christ said that he would not leave his people as orphans, but that he would be present in the lives of his people through the indwelling Spirit. It is important that we recognize this truth. The Holy Spirit is one with God the Father and God the Son. We cannot have Jesus and not have the Father. We cannot have the Father and not have the Spirit.

Reminds us of God’s word

The Holy Spirit gives us a passion to be in the Word of God. When we are paying attention to the message of God’s word, the Spirit implants this message into our minds and hearts. When we have the need for this wisdom, the Spirit goes to work in us, bringing the Word of God to mind.

Peace in times of trouble

The Holy Spirit is the peace of Christ. If you are asking the Lord to bring you peace in the midst of a trial or storm, the Holy Spirit will baptize you into the peace of Christ. Seek the Spirit’s ministry and comfort, and you will know peace.

Function

The function of the Spirit, as presented to us by Christ, is to be our guide, our advocate, and our teacher. The Spirit provides us with the right message from God’s word when we need the truth of the Lord the most.

We need to see that there is nothing embarrassing or “out there” about acknowledging the presence and person of the one that the Lord Jesus sent.

In Christ,
