In today’s devotional, we hear a powerful message from the Apostles John and Peter as they shared the name of Jesus Christ with those who needed to see and experience his power and reality. As you prepare for the days ahead, consider the lesson presented in this message and ask the Lord to help you be free to share the truth of Jesus Christ with others.
12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: “Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.
(Acts 3:12-16 NIV11)
Specific
In his address to the crowd that gathered around him after the Lord brought healing to the beggar who could not walk, we hear how more about the importance of the name of Jesus Christ.
Peter and John did not tell the assembled crowd that the man had been healed by a cosmic force, by nature itself, by the a nameless and formless god that can interpreted in whatever way any of them chose.
Pointed
Listen to the way in which Peter pointed to the one who brought healing to this man:
- Peter and John did not take credit or claim any sort of power.
- The one at work was the God of Israel (Abraham, Issaac, and Jacob), the God of their ancestors.
- This same God moved to bring glory to Jesus.
- Even though he died on the cross, this same Jesus was raised from the dead.
- This same Jesus is the author (originator) of life itself.
- Faith that brings salvation and eternal life must be in the name of Jesus Christ.
- Those who trust in Jesus Christ will see God at work in them.
Why the Name?
Why does it matter that we know that this man was healed by the divine force that is known by the name of Jesus Christ? Because Jesus Christ was and is a real entity. He is not one of the made up gods that the confused and lost hold out as a replacement for the one true God.
Verse 16
Listen again to the conclusion of this message, “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.”
Purpose
Faith in Jesus Christ opens the door to being connected to the one true God of creation. This is, after all, the purpose of the Christ. The Promised One has come into human flesh so that we might see and understand the true nature and person of Yahweh, the God of the Bible.
Jesus reveals the person, nature, values, and power of the Lord God Almighty in a way that we can understand and experience as we trust in him as our own Lord.
Included
Peter and John were used by God to help those who were willing to move toward the Lord. The more that we move toward Christ, the more that we follow him, learn about him and from him, the more that we move into the person of the Creator.
This was the point of Peter and John’s message. Come to Jesus by faith and you will be included in the work and power of the Lord.
Hope
It is my hope that you will take this message with you today as you encounter so many people who do not yet know the person of Jesus Christ.
- Help those God places in your path today to connect with the specific person of Jesus Christ.
- Share your own connection with Jesus Christ as the Lord opens the door for you to share this truth with others.
- Do not be afraid of the name of Jesus. Trust him and speak his name.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I am grateful that you have revealed yourself to us in the message of the Bible. Help me to have a growing hunger to know you more and more. I confess that I am occasionally afraid to speak the name of Jesus for fear of how others might respond. Help me to trust you and to speak your name without fear.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
