Of all the holidays on my calendar each year, Thanksgiving is my favorite. I love the simplicity of the motivation behind this day. There are no presents to purchase, no decorations or lights to put up and take down, no songs that must be sung, and there are no events that must be attended.

The only thing that MUST be a part of Thanksgiving is the act of giving thanks.

This holiday is one that all people can participate in no matter their religious background or family traditions. All are invited to stop and give thanks for the good in their lives and for the blessings and sacrifices of others who have made our lives what they are today.

For the follower of Christ, Thanksgiving takes on another element of joy. This is a time when we can join with others who do not yet have faith in Christ and encourage them to give thanks to the Lord for his love, mercy, and gift of grace.

In fact, the act of giving thanks is a big part of our calling as followers of Jesus. We can hear that truth expressed clearly in the message of the Apostle Paul to the church in the passage that follows:

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

(Philippians 4:6-7 NIV11)
