THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR RYAN LADEN
| Following his teaching on how even our most important and most intimate relationships are built on our internal commitments and that which we hold to be most true and real in our hearts, Jesus continued in his teaching. This next section of the Sermon on the Mount speaks to our commitments to one another. Listen to what Jesus teaches in the following: “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ But I tell you, do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”Matthew 5:33-37 NIV Good Name In Proverbs 22:1 (NIV-11) we are told, “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” · How does breaking your commitments, oaths, vows, promises given in the sight of God and men impact your good name?· In addition to the damage such failure does to your reputation, how does such infidelity impact the health and quality of your relationships? Become Because God cares deeply about the health of your relationships with others in this life, Jesus Christ teaches his disciples to become people that do what they say and say what they do. This is why the Lord challenges us to think before we speak. We ought not make any commitment to God or to one another that we do not fully intend to keep. Character · Have you ever been around someone who lets their “Yes be Yes, and No, No?”· What does this kind of consistency and honesty teach you about that person’s character?· Is this something that you wish you could emulate in your life?· What would it take for you to be someone who does what you say? Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, help me see areas in my own life, in my heart, where I am not being honest with you or with those around me. Help me stop embellishing the truth to make myself look better or sound more important. Help me stand firm in my commitments and to become a habitual truth teller. I want to bring you glory in all that I say and do. Thank you, Lord. In Christ,Ryan Laden |
