THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR RYAN LADEN
Please the Lord
One of the more challenging parts of living a life of faith and obedience to the Lord stems from uncertainty surrounding how we treat the people around us. There is not a step-by-step guide given to the child of God on how to please the Lord in every social interaction, point of conflict, or business dealing. And yet we are called to represent Christ as his ambassadors in these and every other set of circumstances.
In the teaching below, we hear a message from Jesus Christ that can and should help us treat others in a way that pleases the Lord.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Golden Rule
In verse 12 we hear a familiar teaching from Jesus that often goes by the moniker, “The Golden Rule.” This teaching is called the golden rule because it sums up our call to please the Lord in all of our interactions with others. It is the gold standard of human ethics.
The basic premise is that we will inherently seek to do good for ourselves, benefit ourselves, and otherwise act in ways that advance our own interests. Clearly, human beings do not always act in ways that show true love of self. We often harm ourselves and do that which brings destruction upon our self-interests. But for the most part, most people understand what it means to treat others in a way that they would like to be treated.
Application
Below, you will find an interesting application of this principle drawn from a teaching given during the age of the Israelite expansion:
“If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.”
In this application we hear a bit about what it means to do for others what you would like them to do for you. If your primary mode of transportation decided to wander off on its own, and then forgets the way home, it is reasonable to assume that you would like it if some kind soul were to take it in for the night and take care of it until you had a chance to go out and find it.
In the same way, we are called by Jesus Christ to show love for others for two reasons.
· First and foremost, we are called to show love to others because we have been and are loved unconditionally by the Lord. It is our pleasure to allow the love of God to flow through us as we show love to others.
· And secondly, we are to show love to others because we would like it if others would show love to us. If we would appreciate love, then we should give love.
Reflection
As you go through your day today, consider the message of the following passage. Allow it to guide you as you encounter people in your daily routine.
“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”
In Christ,
