THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR RYAN LADEN (DEVOTIONALS)
| Mighty God In the message given by the Lord through the prophet Isaiah, we hear how a baby to be born will be known by some amazing titles which speak to his nature and purpose. One of those titles found in Isaiah 9:6-7 is that of “Mighty God.” There is no other way to understand this title being given to a baby to be born than to see that this expected child will be God in flesh appearing. We can hear this promise from the Lord in the passage that follows: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.”Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV11 Confident Expectation The follower of God who takes seriously this promise concerning the Messiah must see that the Lord himself intends to break into creation as this expectant Savior. The faithful child of God can trust in this promise because the Lord has made good on all prior promises. This kind of hope, or confident expectation, is built on the prior faithfulness or past action of the Lord. That is one the greatest gifts that we can receive in the message of the Bible. As we recount the faithfulness of God to his children of the past, we can trust in the promises of God that we are still expecting to come to pass in the future. Word Became Flesh In the opening chapter of the Gospel of John, we hear the bold and resolute claim that this promised incarnation of the Lord in the form of this expectant child has been completed by the birth of Jesus Christ. In John’s Gospel, “the Word” (another title for Jesus of Nazareth) is clearly shown to be part of the divine presence of the Trinity (Father, Son and Spirit). Listen to this bold and clear message of incarnation found in the passage that follows: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”John 1:1-4 NIV11 “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”John 1:14 NIV11 Reflection As you go through your day today, consider the following truths, presented resolutely by the Apostle John as he testified to the coming of the incarnate God: In the beginning was the Word Jesus was with the creator before any act of creation took place. The Word was with God Jesus was one with the Father and one with the Spirit before anything else ever existed. The Word was God There has always been a oneness to the Godhead and Jesus as God the Son has always been one with God the Father and God the Spirit. Through him all things were made Jesus, God the Son, is the agent of creation. All that is has come to us through the power, authority, and creativity of the Lord. In him was life The very animation of creation, the breath of life, is a gift that extends from the work and person of Jesus Christ. The Word became flesh In the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, the promise of God has been completed. Mighty God has been born as a baby boy. God in flesh appearing. Praise God for all of his faithfulness and splendor. In Christ, Ryan Laden |
