There are two big ideas in the passage that follows and they are closely linked to one another.

Embrace

The first big idea teaches us that the grace of God leads us to obedience to the commands and example of Jesus Christ. As we embrace the gift of God’s love and mercy as seen in the work and person of Jesus Christ, we will grow in our love of the Lord.

As our love grows, we will want to show our love for God to the Lord directly. And one of the ways that we demonstrate our love for the Lord is in our choice to seek to be made into his image.

Eternity

The second big idea is seen in the promise of heaven. The Lord has promised that all who believe in him and who receive his love and mercy with faith will be enveloped into the glory of God as we live eternally in his new creation.

The more that we embrace this hope (trusting in the past faithfulness of God as we look to his future promises) the more that we will see our true identity. We are a people who have been redeemed from all that stains and damages us in this life and are now a people belonging to Jesus Christ.

As you read this portion of Paul’s letter to Titus, look for these two big ideas:

11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. 3:1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

(Titus 2:11-3:1 NIV11)

Teach

According to the Apostle Paul, if we have received the love of Christ and are living in the new identity, the new nature that we have received by faith, then we should embrace these truths so tightly that we cannot help but have them become a part of our daily lives.

If we really believe in the work of Christ and if we truly embrace our new status as sons and daughters of God, then we must teach others about these truths.

And how should we teach?

  •  Encouragement of those who are seeking growth in their faith
  •  Rebuking those who claim to speak for God but who do not speak his truth
  •  Living our lives in a winsome, attractive manner that no one could despise
  •  Be a good citizen and seek truth in the world around you
  •  Do good for those to whom you can do good
  •  Do not lie about others or tell stories that are not true
  •  Basically, live in such a way that those closest to you and those far away from you can see the love and goodness of Christ coming out of you in your words, attitudes, and actions.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, help me to see and understand the truth of who you have made me into through your redeeming work. Thanks to you Lord I am made completely new in your sight and am included in your glory for all of eternity. Help me live out this reality today. Thank you Lord

In Christ,
