When God is glorified in and through my actions, words, and attitudes, I am blessed beyond measure. For those seeking to live a life of faith and commitment to the Lord, we know that seeing God at work in us and through us brings us the greatest sense of joy and satisfaction that we can or will experience in this life.
Fingerprints
When God provides me with an opportunity to point to his glory and majesty, I am able to see God at work. I often refer to this as seeing the “fingerprints of God” in my life. As the Lord allows me to be a part of his work, I am able to find real satisfaction.
This is the point being made in verse 3 of Psalm 23. The Good Shepherd is seen here caring for his people by guiding those who will listen to his voice along a safe and wholesome path.
The Lord leads his children into those actions and attitudes that are objectively good and right. He leads us in his ways so that as we are changed by his leadership, the Lord will receive glory and praise by all who see the fingerprints of God in you.
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
(Psalm 23:1-6 NIV11)
Why?
Think of the various ways that the Lord provides us with his leadership, guidance, and support as we seek to follow his ways.
As we think about these good gifts we might wonder why the Lord would do all of this for us?
- Why does the Lord give us his word in the pages of the Bible?
- Why does the Lord give us his presence in the gift and the work of the Holy Spirit?
- Why does the Lord give us the family of faith, the body of Christ, the living church to walk beside us?
Answer
The answer is that the Lord does all of this for his name’s sake. For his name’s sake, the Shepherd leads us, calls to us, and guides us away from the paths of sin and the paths that lead to pain and emotional chaos.
The Lord leads us toward his paths of right living and obedience to the wisdom of the Word of God. The Lord is guiding his children toward good for his names sake.
Ask
Let me ask you this, why does God continue to call out to you, follow after you, and guide you even after you turn your back on him, choose to follow the path of sin, and choose to rebel against his love and mercy?
Why does God not give up on you?
- Because you are so awesome?
- Because you are worthy of his death and resurrection?
No way.
The Lord does it all so that his creation will see his glory and acknowledge his name.
And I thank God for this truth.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
